Maybe you can play and edit AVI files on Windows PC, because AVI is a Windows format. While, Mac El Capitan is a totally different Operation System from Windows, so it’s common that you can’t play or edit AVI videos in FCP X on Mac. Microsoft abandoned development of AVI many years ago, these AVI files probably in a codec that's not supported by FCP X. In this case, we need to convert AVI videos to Apple ProRes 422 which FCP X is most compatible with.

Steps of How to Import AVI files to FCP X
Step 1. Add AVI files to the program.
Launch it and we provide two options to get started: drag and drop AVI files to the Mac App directly, or you can click Add Video button to load the AVI files you want to add.
Step 2. Choose the preset output format – Apple ProRes 422
For importing AVI video to Final Cut Pro X, we have prepared the most suitable output setting for you. Click the format bar, and move mouse to “Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)” as the output format.

Step 3. Start converting AVI files.
Click the big red "Convert" button in the main UI to start converting AVI files to Apple ProRes 422. Just wait for a while, then you can have your converted videos by clicking "Open" button.
Notes:
1. When converting MXF footage using Final Cut Pro oriented format templates(e.g. Apple Prores), please ensure that your computer has Final Cut Pro installed, otherwise the converted files will have audio only without image.
2. If you are using FCP X, please make sure you have installed ProApps QuickTime Codecs, or you may get files with sound only without video.
Step 4. Import converted AVI files to FCP X.
Now you are able to import and edit AVI files to FCP with no problem. You can drag and drop your converted AVI files to the left panel of the Final Cut Pro X for editing.
