Hands-on Experience with the Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph (for Airbus Business Jets)

This new and exquisitely designed aviation timepiece (both in price and design) is a collaboration between Richard Mille and Airbus Business Jets, and it debuted at the 2016 SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie). ACJ stands for Airbus Business Jets, a subsidiary of the French aircraft manufacturer that produces jets accommodating 20 to 50 passengers for the ultra-wealthy, corporations, and even governments. ACJ's collaboration with Richard Mille resulted in this distinctive Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph.

According to Richard Mille and ACJ, the two companies spent approximately two years creating this limited edition Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph. The most unique aspect of this timepiece is its numerous design elements inspired by Airbus aircraft. I know there will certainly be people who don't like this watch, like all Richard Mille watches—there will always be those who love it and those who don't. I admit that on paper, the design of this watch doesn't seem entirely satisfactory. Its color scheme, design inspiration, and overall shape description all seem crazy, even absurd, but when it's actually worn on the wrist, it's flawless.

The most striking aircraft-themed design element of the Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph is the dial, shaped like a curved rectangular airplane window. Other "jet plane" design elements include the wheel-shaped crown, the Airbus ACJ logo and other symbols on the side of the case, and the hands and dial design inspired by modern aircraft instrument panels. The dial's color is slightly vibrant, but it perfectly complements the overall theme.
This Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph is primarily made of titanium with some alloy accents, making it remarkably lightweight on the wrist. The case measures 42.70 mm (width) x 50.10 mm (height) x 16.50 mm (thickness). Another highlight is the white ceramic bezel. Small Airbus-specific tension screws are set into the bezel, adding a unique design element to the timepiece.
In keeping with Richard Mille's signature style, the case and movement of this watch are meticulously crafted in terms of detail and finishing. The watch houses an in-house movement; while not technically entirely new, the use of many new parts and materials gives it a fresh feel. You'll notice that some movement components exhibit a unique, almost bronze-like texture—in fact, these parts are coated with a special anti-corrosion material used in Airbus aircraft. While I can't say this movement boasts exceptional functionality in the Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph, its appearance is undeniably striking. The movement itself is intricately designed, combining rich personality with powerful functionality.

The Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph features a new version of Richard Mille's manual-winding tourbillon split-seconds chronograph movement. The dial is mostly made of sapphire crystal, but the tourbillon (including the bridges) and the mainspring barrel have separate openings. This watch features a 60-minute split-seconds chronograph function, along with a power reserve indicator, movement torque indicator, and crown selector. Of course, the tourbillon also functions as the seconds hand.
Vibrant colors are clearly becoming increasingly important for Richard Mille, with the brand's founder and creative soul constantly releasing watches with brightly colored dials (such as the RM 60-1 St. Barthélemy Automatic Flyback Chronograph) and timepieces featuring cases made of unique materials like NTPT quartz. Traditionalists in the watchmaking world might easily dismiss these designs, but for those who are both wealthy and avant-garde, the transition from a more conservative timepiece to a Richard Mille and then back to a more conservative one is difficult.

Besides the titanium case, most of the components of the RM50-02 manual-winding movement inside the Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph are also made of titanium—of course, these titanium pieces undergo extremely fine polishing and finishing. The exquisite craftsmanship and perfect finishing are evident; Richard Mille himself seems to enjoy pushing the limits, striving for excellence not only in the functional complexity of the movement but also in its structural complexity. This tourbillon movement operates at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.

In fact, at its core, the Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph is a very traditional Richard Mille timepiece (although Richard Mille itself is a rather unconventional brand), incorporating unique design elements created specifically for its special partner (ACJ). Even so, these unique features do not compromise the core wearing experience and functionality of a Richard Mille watch. This timepiece perfectly blends familiarity and innovation, showcasing a consistently sought-after brand image, despite its price point being accessible only to a select few.
