Problems when Importing AVI files to FCP 7

When try to import AVI footage shot on Sony Camcorder to Final Cut Pro 7, only to find the AVI files are grayed out and cannot import to FCP 7.

I have a number of files in .avi format that do successfully import to FCP 7, but only play audio. The video says "unrendered". When I tried to render, only to get the respond that there was no matching codec.

Why Can't Import or Edit AVI in FCP 7?

At the very beginning, Final Cut Pro is not compatible with AVI video. Though from Final Cut Pro 6 to Final Cut Pro 7 add the support for AVI format, however, it still cannot import all kinds of AVI files. For AVI is a container video format which may contain various video or audio codec, if the AVI codec is not compatible with Final Cut Pro 7, we will fail to import AVI to FCP 7; or even successfully import to FCP 7, but the import AVI files will still not playable or editable.

For example, if your AVI files are not much more common AVI file type, encoded with a codec, like DivX, XviD, it can’t be directly imported into Final Cut 7, you’ll need to convert AVI to Prores that is FCP 7 compatible format for editing in Final Cut Pro 7.

How to Import AVI to Final Cut Pro?

To do that, you can use Pavtube Video Converter for Mac, which is a good app that supports converting all your favorite files including AVI to ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes Proxy, ProRes 422 LT, ProRes 4444 video without losing any quality for using in Final Cut Pro 7.

Plus, you may also encode AVI to iMovie, FCE, Avid MC and more NLE programs highly compatible formats for smooth editing. Besides, it might help you change AVI to other frequent formats like MP4,MOV, MKV, etc for playback on media devices.
